All in a Day's Work. The inner city of Rawalpindi, Pakistan is bustling with life. Here, a man takes a rest from
pushing his cart from the sweltering heat. In the images that follow, a woman with her child beg for money and
pedestrians browse the endless variety of handcrafts on sale, including these traditional hand sown Pakistani shoes. A
street performer offers to entertain while local butchers sit reading the newspaper, waiting for his next customer.
After the Soviet invasion into Afghanistan in the 1970s, many fled the country and sought refuge in the neightboring
country of Pakistan. Today, hundreds of thousands of Afghan Refugees are still living in mud village camps in the
outskirts of large cities in northern Pakistan including Peshwar, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Despite their
impoverished living conditions including a serious lack of sanitation and malnourished livestock, I have met not a
single group of more hospitable and soulful people as those living in these camps. Despite their conditions, these
Afghan Refugees seem to embody a unique happiness in their life.
A Pakistani mother tends to her crying child in their home in Gilgit, Pakistan. Her child suffers from a mentally
disability. In these remote areas of northern Pakistan, special education necessary for children such as she was non
existent until the Mehnaz Fatima Special Education Foundation was founded by Dr. Zeba Rasmussen. This nonprofit
foundation focuses on education and therapy for children in need.
Long Island, New York hosted the 2006 Rajasthani Association of North America convention in which several
talented Rajasthani performers were flown over from India to perform for the four day event. Traditional dance was
performed throughout the convention in addition to modern Bollywood performances by Indian pop stars. Gulubo,
seen here is a renown traditional performer. She is known for her existential movement and passionate performances.
